Portlaoise blitz the opposition

The Portlaoise boy’s U-12 basketball team travelled to Kilcullen to play in a Midland Area League Blitz. In their first game of the day they played host Club Kildare Gliders.

Portlaoise hit the ground running with fine scores from Darren Moore and their ball handler Ben O’Reilly. As the quarter went on Portlaoise continued to dominate with good movement of the ball resulting in baskets from Colm Byrne and Stephen Mc Cabe.

The second quarter saw both teams playing well, exchanging baskets, Kildare scored through Eoin Myers while Portlaoise replied through James Phelan and Rian O Connell. Portlaoise continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with baskets from Eddie Critchley and Captain on the day Rian O Connell to open up a significant 12-point gap at the halftime break.

The second half continued much the same with the bigger and stronger Portlaoise lads dominating the game with strong defence and fine shooting from Colm Byrne and Ben O Reilly who was eventually to be top scorer of the game with an excellent 14 points.

The last quarter saw both teams relax with the final outcome in little doubt both teams put in good performances, Colin Smith and David O Sullivan played well for Kildare while Darren Moore and Niall Carey put in good work for the visiting team. As the game came to a close Portlaoise finished the stronger with fine shooting from James Phelan and Eddie Critchley to help their team go on to a well deserved win.

In their second game of the day Portlaoise played Athlone basketball club.

Portlaoise started the better with early baskets from Jack Coss and Colm Byrne. As the quarter went on Portlaoise were dominating with strong defence and running the floor at every opportunity resulting in fine scores from Ben O’Reilly and Darren Moore.

The second quarter saw both teams playing well, David Mooney scored for Athlone while Rian O’Connell and Eddie Critchley replied for Portlaoise. Portlaoise kept the scoreboard ticking over with scores from James Phelan and Niall Carey. As the halftime whistle approached Portlaoise extended their lead thanks to baskets from Niall Carey and Leon Houlihan.

The second half continued much the same as the first with Portlaoise dominating the game with strong man-to-man defence and fine shooting at the other end from James Connolly and Colm Byrne who was eventually to be top scorer of the game with an excellent 11 points.

As the quarter went on Portlaoise extended their lead with baskets from Stephen Mc Cabe and James Connolly. The last quarter saw good play from both teams, Colm Rice and Robert Byrne played well for Athlone while Darren Moore and Eddie Critchley put points on the scoreboard to help their team go on to a well deserved win.
