editorial image

Portlaoise Golf Club held its Captains Drive In on Sunday 24th February.Approx 120 people waited at the clubhouse to see what mode of transport the Captains might use.

The two Captains, Kieran Byrne and Lady Captain Susan Delaney surprised the assembled crowd by arriving cross country in two brightly decorated golf buggies. After the congratulations and best wishes were passed on, the popping of the champagne took place.

The Captains then took their place on the first tee box for the ceremonial Drive In to officially launch the golfing year.

Ninety-six players then took to the course to battle it out in a four person classic competition. Maurice Bohan, Simon Tidd, Mary Bland and Paddy Kelly made up the winning team, beating off the challenge of the other 23 teams.

The crowd then retired to the clubhouse for a meal, presentation of prizes and a post mortem on what might have been! Thank you to all who turned out to honour the Captains and best of luck in the year ahead. Visit www.portlaoisegolfclub.com for details of Open fixtures for the year.
