Portlaoise too strong for Carlow

Portlaoise continued their winning streak on Sunday when they took on Carlow in Loretto Kilkenny.

Once again the Portlaoise ladies gave a wonderful demonstration of collaborative effort with each member of the team playing a vital role in building the attack and also working together in defence.

It did not take long for Portlaoise to be rewarded for their efforts as Grainne Dunne swept the ball past the Carlow ‘keeper giving Portlaoise and early lead. The ladies followed this up with another goal from a short corner when Karen Fingleton put a slight deflection on direct shot taken by Ailbhe Booth to slip the ball into the goal once more.

Portlaoise’s third goal of the first half was the result of an attack up the right side of the pitch finished with a spectacular clean cross goal hit from Eimear Dunne.

Portlaoise dominated in the first portion of the match however in the five minutes before half time, Carlow began to fight back. Despite some credible attempts at goals from the Carlow forwards, Portlaoise managed to maintain their 3-0 lead at the half time whistle.

In the second half the game was more evenly balanced and Carlow challenged the Portlaoise defence on multiple occasions. However Portlaoise still managed to increase their lead with two further two goals. The first was scored by Cathy Kane which was followed up by another by Marian O’Boyle.

As the game continued, Portlaoise began to tire and as a result their attacking play became more stilted and the pressure came on their defence. Carlow capitalised on this change in play by Portlaoise and as the game was drawing to a close Carlow finally showed a more threatening presence. In the final five minutes of the game Carlow scored two quick goals from penalty short corners. But this aggressive attack came too late to change the outcome of the game and Portlaoise came away the victors.
