Portlaoise U-18s start season with two wins

The Portlaoise Panthers Boys U-18s team travelled to Portarlington on Saturday in the first round of this seasons Midland League and got off to the best possible start with two convincing wins over Tullamore and Naas.

In their first game of the day they overcame Tullamore on a scoreline of 59-29. Under new coach Jack Scully the team were keen to impress and with the more senior players in scoring form, Kyle Burke (18) and Jack Dooley (16), Portlaoise were out of sight by half time.

The Panthers boys pressed in defence from the tip-off and Tullamore continuously failed to break down the Portlaoise men. The boys ran away convincing winners and were full of confidence going into the second game.

In the second game against Naas, the Portlaoise men once again got the perfect start and it was one all one-way traffic with all ten Panthers players rotated throughout the game. Coach Jack Scully was really happy to get a look at each player and no-one disappointed as they all registered on the scoreboard during the game.

Tight defence allowed Portlaoise to break away quickly and they finished strongly to again claim victory on a scoreline of 72-35. This has been the best possible start for the Panthers boys but will face tougher opposition in Kestrels in the next round of games.

Team: Jack Dooley, James Dunne, Kyle Burke, Liam Campbell, Dusan Rabat, Mark Bartley, Tiernan Dempsey, Robbie Mc Sweeney, Gearoid Ennis, Hugh Hackett. Coach: Jack Scully.
