Portlaoise Athletic Club have launched their ‘Streets of Portlaoise 5k’ Run which will take place in the town on St Patrick’s Day.

The event was launched by GAA President Liam O’Neill in the Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise. He said he was delighted to launch any event in Laois which would promote the county.

Also present at the launch were representatives from this years’ chosen charities Spinal Injuries Ireland and Acquired Brain Injury.

Over 350 took part this year and the club is hoping to exceed that number with the 2013 event. The 5k run will take place on St Patrick’s Day in Portlaoise at 11.30am and is open to runners, joggers and walkers.

Entrants can enter online at runireland.com or on the day in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. The main sponsor of the race this year is Portlaoise Credit Union and the club is also delighted to have the Heritage Hotel, Downey’s Auto stop and Laois Sports Partnership on board.

Running in conjunction with the ‘Streets of Portlaoise 5k’ road race is the ‘Couch 2 5k’ 10 week fitness programme which begins on January 8 and will end with the 5k run on March 17. This proved very successful last year with over 45 people taking part. This is open to anybody who would like to get fit for the New Year and is open to all levels of fitness. It takes place on Tuesday nights 6pm-7pm at the running track beside Portlaoise College. Check out

Portlaoise Athletic Club on facebook for further details.
