Table tennis thriving in Ballyroan

editorial image

Saint Patricks weekend got off to an energetic start in Ballyroan last Saturday morning with the second year of the club’s Junior Tabletennis tournament taking place in the local community hall.

Attracting great interest, players travelled from as far away as Dunlavin as well as strong participation from Carlow, Newbridge and the local clubs of Rathdowney and Killermogh.

Ranging in age from 8 to 16 years old, players of varying levels of ability from beginners to those with provincial titles competed across four divisions for the beautiful trophies on offer. With several matches going to five sets and some shots that were simply magical, there was no shortage of tension and excitement.

As the action concluded in the mid afternoon, it is safe to say that junior table tennis is alive and well in the midlands. The next big event is this coming weekend with the Connacht Open taking place in Castlebar where U-10, 12, 14 and 17 All-Ireland titles are up for grabs.

Best of luck to Ballyroan’s Kate Whelan in defending her All-Ireland U-12 title which she has been dominating over the last year and to Jack Carroll who hopes to build on his recent Leinster U-10 title and try to gain the national top spot.
