Team Coppers travelled to Athy on Friday night to take on AC Demons in what was a must win game if they wanted to keep there hopes of a place in the Division1 Top 4 finals alive.

MENS MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIVISION 1

Athy Demons 66

Team Coppers 110

A remarkable second half performance from the Portlaoise men ensured they would take the points and keep them in touch with the other teams around them.

As the game started it was obvious Coppers were a bit rusty after the Xmas break with a lot of easy baskets being missed. Athy got stuck in and didn’t give there opponents an inch, but Portlaoise eventually got themselves going and started to run the ball with some good results.

Craig and Jack Scully were excellent throughout finishing off some fine moves. Denis Curtin and David Glynn also ran the ball very well, but Athy never gave up and were matching their much more experienced opponents all over the court.

As the first half went on coach Benny Donovan freshened up the play by introducing players, Chris Higgins and Jack Dooley came on and got some great turnovers and finished with some strong baskets, half time Coppers led 37-31.

Whatever coach Donovan said to his team at half time worked wonders as Coppers came out aggressively, a full court press was applied and they turned the ball over several times with Jack Scully and Conor Dunne finishing off on the break.

As the game went on Coppers kept extending there lead. Sean O’Neil came of the bench to nail two 3 pointers, Craig Scully was a thorn in Athy’s side from inside the key, Chris Higgins, Denis Curtin and Conor Dunne were running the ball brilliantly and controlling the offence and there speed and fitness really showed in the last quarter.

Coppers completely destroyed Athy’s defence as they scored 46 points in the final ten minutes with the game finishing up 110- 66. It’s Team Coppers fifth win of the season and keeps their chances of a Top 4 finish alive, sitting in 2nd spot in the league at this stage.

Team Coppers: Jack Scully (Capt), Craig Scully, Chris Higgins, David Glynn, Neil Fennell, Jack Dooley, Jamie Dooley, Denis Curtin, Conor Dunne, Sean O’Neill. Coach: Benny O’Donovan.
