U-12 girls get season up and running

Portlaoise hosted the first round of the U12 Midland League in St Marys Hall last weekend. Portlaoise faced reigning champions Clonaslee in their first match and this proved a very tough task for the girls from the outset.

Clonaslee, a well drilled team, lead from start to finish with Portlaoise never getting a foothold in the game. Portlaoise however battled hard and were inspired by some great individual play by Shauna Dooley and Amy Byrne who clocked up some great scores in the final quarter. Clonaslee ran out deserved winners in the end.

Their second game, against Gliders of Kildare, was a much closer affair with every player on the team giving a much better account of themselves. Portlaoise started the brighter of the two sides with Shauna Dooley getting on the end of some well worked fast breaks to clock up an early lead. Strong inside play by Claudia Nevin allowed Portlaoise to stay within a couple of baskets of the opposition.

Portlaoise worked hard throughout the game both offensively and defensively with some great play by Sarah Flemming and Maria Carroll. It was a great performance by both teams with Gliders coming out the stronger in the end.

Team: Amy Byrne, Ciara Byrne, Shauna Dooley, Maria Carroll, Chloe Grant O’Shea, Lauren Dwyer, Claudia Nevin, Sinead Grant, Rebecca Quinn, Sarah Flemming, Shannon Carroll O’Reilly, Olivia Njumbe, Rosa Lukoki, Saoirse Lawlor, Emma Roche, Danielle Klerauskaite, Grainne O’Reilly, Sinead Brady, Megan Grant, Molly Gleeson and Emilly Griffey.
