Last Tuesday saw Portloaise Panthers U-14 girls recommence their games in the Kilkenny League after the Christmas break.

The Portlaoise girls faced Kilkenny’s Berkley in St Mary’s Hall. The sides had met once before at the start of the season with Portlaoise coming out on top on that occasion, however Berkley are an experienced team and Portlaoise knew they would have to play very well if they were to obtain another victory.

The Portlaoise girls started the brighter of the two sides with Maeve Phelan controlling the play from the point. Sophie Delahunt and Ellen Connolly passed the ball well around the key allowing Maeve take her player to the board and clock up scores for her team. Lauren Dwyer and Emer Healy worked hard in defence and denied the travelling team scores. This resulted in the home side leading by eight points at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started in the same vein with Portlaoises’ Erone Fitzpatrick and Amy Byrne linking up well together to create great scoring opportunities. Ailbhe Griffin rebounded to great effect during the quarter out letting the ball to Maria Carroll and Aoife Fitzpatrick who converted from the fast break. This allowed the home side to take a sixteen point lead at the half time break.

The second half saw the introduction of Leah Ethon and Beth Carroll. Both girls maintained the tempo of the game that their team mates had set. The Portlaoise girls ran through different plays allowing scores to come from both inside and outside the key. As a result Portlaoise pulled away and secured another well deserved win.
