The Portlaoise boys U-12 basketball team travelled to Portarlington to play Kestrels in the last game of this years league competition.
Portlaoise started the better with early baskets from Ben Conroy and his cousin Jake Conroy. Kestrels came strong into the game with baskets from Keith Quinn and Kevin Crowley.
As the quarter came to a close Portlaoise held a three point lead thanks to baskets from Sam Wynne and Darragh Beere. The second quarter saw the game open up into a fast running game with both teams playing well, exchanging baskets, Ryhan Murphy and Adam Ryan put points on the board for the home team while Damien Moore and Niall Fitzpatrick replied for Portlaoise.
As the quarter went on Portlaoise had good performances from Davin McEvoy and Matthew Delaney but as the halftime whistle approached Kestrels got the last two scores to see them lead by two points, scoreline 17-15.
The second half saw the game tighten up and scores were very hard to come by with both defences on top. Kestrels had good performances from Jack O Neill and Sam Molloy while Matthew Delaney and Darragh Beere put in good work for the visiting team.
James Connolly for Portlaoise was controlling the game from the point guard position with Sam Wynne finishing off with baskets. The lead changed hands again with James Connolly getting some fine scores to help Portlaoise to a three point lead.
The last quarter saw Kestrels get a couple of quick baskets to regain the lead. Portlaoise continued to battle hard for every ball with good performances from Davin Mc Evoy and Niall Fitzpatrick but they did not finish with scores.
Kestrels on the other hand took their opportunities and opened up a significant eight point gap. As the game came to a close Portlaoise went on the full court press to try to reduce the gap but Kestrels held their composure to go on to a well deserved win.
