Lyons and McAuliffe in the medals at Transplant Games

Laois athlete Robbie Lyons is coming home from the European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships in Krakow today with two silver medals and a bronze.

Also in the medals is Portarlington man Eddie McAuliffe who won a gold medal in the golf for his nett score.

From The Swan in Laois, Robbie, a 20 year old kidney transplant recipient, competed in the 18 to 29 year old category in his 400m and 100m sprint events.

In the 100m event he crossed the line in 12.53 seconds securing a bronze behind two Hungarians. In the 400m sprint, with a time of 61.7 seconds, he was just pipped to the post by a German competitor. In the Long Jump event he secured a silver medal competing against athletes aged between 18 and 39 years and one former Olympian who took Gold.

Robbie said after his first race, the 100m sprint, “I am really happy with the outcome. The racing conditions were extremely tough with the rain which makes me even more proud of my time.”

Eddie McAuliffe, who plays off a handicap of 14, took the gold medal for his nett round. Transplant Team Ireland proved to be unstoppable in the golf events taking home a staggering seven gold, three silver and one bronze.

Team Ireland is comprised of 34 athletes including 25 men and nine women ranging in age from 16 to 76 years and includes 29 transplant recipients (five liver, 22 kidney, one combined Kidney and Pancreas, and 1 bone marrow transplant), as well as five people who are receiving dialysis treatment.

The Irish Kidney Association is responsible for the coordination and organisation of Transplant Team Ireland’s participation in the European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships.
