The club’s promising young girls travelled to Old Leighlin last weekend for a great day of basketball. Firstly the girls took on a very strong Kilkenny Wildcats.
Some of our girls had the pleasure of meeting this team in a previous tournament and went in ready to play tough basketball. The Portlaoise girls started off superbly with great baskets from Ella Byrne and Caoimhe Sweeney.
Allie Dunne and Mai Fitzpatrick played strong hard defense throughout the day. Macayla Moore had a great day under the baskets and constantly fought hard for both offensive and defence rebounds. Niamh Doyle was a big threat to the opposition with her persistent hard defence.
Unfortunately the girls lost out narrowly to the Wildcats but never gave up on the game. In the second game of the day Portlaoise played host Old Leighlin A. The girls were a lot more relaxed heading into this game and they didn’t waste anytime in scoring either. Ellenor had a splendid game and her confidence really began to shine through.
Aisling Flemming fought hard and played great defence. All her hard work finally payed off when the ball began to drop for her and her beaming smile made it all worthwhile. Ciara Douglas kept the pressure on at all times and made it difficult for anyone to pass her. Katelyn Doyle made a huge improvement in this game keeping her head up and playing strong defence.
Sinead Brady helped run fast breaks with her good vision and this pushed the score even further ahead. This was a great win for our girls and gave them a boost heading into the last game. In the final match of the day Portlaoise played the second host team Old Leighlin B. Our girls were tired going into this game but that didn’t stop them. From the beginning they clocked up easy effortless baskets from Grainne O’Reilly.
Great passing from her team mate Hollie Dunne saw Grainne work her magic. Katelyn O’Reilly made a great improvement in this game. She had some great steals which helped her team add to the baskets. Jessie Sunders was strong under the boards with super rebounds. Well done to all the girls who took part it was great experience for them.
