The inaugural Marathon des Escargots in Portarlington proved to be a big success recently, with over 300 runners turning out for the event.

There was a strong local representation in the race, while one man, Hugh Carolan, will remember it for a long time as it was his 100th marathon. One of the female runners, Eimear Hurley, was doing her 99th marathon also. The marathon course record was set on the Friday of this event in a time of 3:04.

Plans are already in place to host another half marathon and 10k on November 23 called ‘Off the Laois’, with the relatively flat course proving a hit with runners looking to set fast times.
