Twenty-two members of Laois Marlins Swim club swam for their schools at the Leinster Schools Championships.
A total of 12 schools were represented by the Laois swimmers at the two- day event held at Donaghmede. A massive haul of 16 medals were picked up by Marlins and proudly displayed at their schools the next day.
Day one of the championships was for Primary school students. Laois Marlins members swam for a record number of eight schools - “an indicator of how far-reaching the impact of the Laois Swim Club is,” according to Chairman Kevin Bracken.
As well as the five medalists listed below – all of whom have now qualified for the Irish Schools Minor Championships, there were some very impressive performances and strong PBs recorded.
Toni Dolan was marginally outside the medals for Barnashrone NS. She shaved off three seconds in the 50m breast and qualified for the Irish Championships.
Jack Rouget, Ballyfin NS swam strong PBs in free and back and also qualified for the Nationals. Iseult Bracken, swimming for Ratheniska NS, recorded strong PBs in 100 IM and 50 Free.
Ross Doyle, swimming for St. Paul’s Portlaoise, swam in the top ten in Free and Breast, and shaved off an impressive total of four seconds.
Twins Christian and Sadbh Kenny-Carroll, who attend Kildangan NS, also had a great gala, shaving off four and nine seconds respectively.
Laois Marlins members swam for four schools at the Senior Championships, where once again, as well as the six medalists listed below, many fine times were recorded. Mountrath CS students Ryan Flynn and Tyler Dolan both recorded strong PBs in individual events, and Ryan was joined on the Mountrath CS relay team by Ian Heffernan, Colm Farrell and Christopher Carew.
Mathew Doyle and Thomas Martin also recorded PBs in individual events for St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise, as did Conor Donoghue for Heywood CS and Grace Hayes for St Fergals College Rathdowney.
Following such wonderful performances, hopes are high that some Marlins will be selected onto the Leinster Schools team to compete at the Irish Schools Interprovincial Championships.
