The Great Heath 10k

The Great Heath 10k run returns this Sunday, January 19, as one of the most popular 10k races in the midlands continues to go from strength to strength.

Almost 800 runners toed the line last year for the 10k, which is run by The Heath GAA club, and there is expected to be an even bigger turnout this year after Laois County Council and Laois Tourism came on board as sponsors.

Owing to The Heath’s location, it has seen athletes come from all over the country to race on the scenic route, which starts outside the clubhouse and takes in Shaen, Derrygarron, Ballydavis and The Heath before finishing back at the clubhouse. Runners from Limerick, Dublin and Waterford all made the trip last year.

All runners are chip-timed, the route is closed to traffic and fully stewarded, with a water station at the halfway mark.

There is hot and cold food afterwards, as well as free sports massage before and after the race. Shower facilities will also be available.

The race starts at 11am, so anyone registering on the morning is urged to get there early.

Online entry is already open through, with entry set at €20, or €28 if you want a race t-shirt included. Early booking for t-shirts is advised due to limited numbers.

Prize money includes €250 for winners, €150 for second and €50 for third in both male and female categories.
