The Portlaoise boys U-12 basketball team travelled to Kilkenny to play Waterford in the Kilkenny Area League.
Portlaoise hit the ground running with quick baskets from James Connolly and Jake Conroy. As the quarter went on they continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with good shooting from Sam Wynne and Ben Conroy.
Portlaoise completely dominated the opening quarter to open up a 12-point gap, finishing with baskets from Darragh Beere and Sam Wynne to see all five starting players get their name on the score sheet.
The second quarter saw the introduction of five new players for Portlaoise but straight away they continued with baskets from Daragh Buggie and Davin Mc Evoy who was eventually to be top scorer of the game with an excellent ten points.
Waterford to their credit battled hard for every ball but the bigger and stronger Portlaoise lads were in full flow with good work from Niall Fitzpatrick and their ball handler Damien Moore.
As the halftime whistle approached Portlaoise extended their lead with strong man-to-man defence with great work from Matthew Delaney and Daragh Buggie.
The second half continued much the same with Portlaoise keeping the scoreboard ticking over thanks to fine shooting from Jake Conroy and Sam Wynne. Waterford were rewarded for their hard work with baskets from John Grant and Kevin Fitzgerald.
As the quarter went on Portlaoise took full control of the game with good movement of the ball resulting in baskets from Luke Thompson and James Connolly. As the last quarter got underway both teams seemed to relax with the final outcome in little doubt, both played good open running basketball resulting in scores.
Portlaoise got baskets through Daragh Buggie and Damien Moore and ended the game the stronger with baskets from their base players Matthew Delaney and Davin McEvoy to help their team go on to a well deserved win.
