Eimear Corri, from Portlaoise, has been named in the Ireland Under 18’s Girls’ Sevens squad for the 2014 Sainsbury’s UK School Games which will take place in Manchester from September 4 to 7.

After he club-mate Alison Miller made such a memorable impression at the World Cup, Corri is hoping to become the latest player from the club to break through on the national stage.

The 12 strong squad, announced by the IRFU last week, was selected after 200 girls, from a wide range of sporting backgrounds, attended open screening days held throughout the country in April.

Eimear, who plays her rugby with Portlaoise RFC, is one of the youngest girls in the squad at just 16 years of age. Eimear has also won an All Ireland bronze medal in the Long Jump.

The team is coached by Stan McDowell and captained by Jayne Pennefather. Jane and her teammates Meabh Donohoe, Irene Herlihy and Shannen Lane were part of the Irish squad which finished fourth in the tournament last year.

Eimear was a key part of the Portlaoise team that recently tasted success at the Greystones Sevens Festival where she finished as top try scorer. She recently won three gold medals at the Laois Track and Field Championships.
