The two sides were evenly matched and it looked like Portarlington was going to draw first blood after nine minutes but unfortunately Martina Russell penalty kick was just wide of the mark.

Portarlington regained possession and put the Carlow defence under pressure however a handling error from Portarlington let the Coyotes off easily. Carlow were given a chance to get back in the game with a penalty kick of their own. The outhalf split the posts and Carlow were off the mark.

Carlow continued to look threatening with ball in hand and Portarlington were lucky to escape on a few occasions. This sustained effort was beginning to show and on 25 minutes, Carlow crossed for the first try of the match. The rest of the half turned into a dog fight with Portarlington taking the challenge to Carlow up front in the set pieces and around the rucks.

The dog fight continued in the second half punctuated with kicks from both teams’ back three. When the Carlow backs had possession, they made the Portarlington defence work hard with some great tackles coming in from Evelyn Browne and Sarah Johnson. Carlow worked the ball along the backline and eventually crossed for their second try. The conversion was missed but the score was now 15-0. Portarlington had a period of unrelenting pressure but failed to cross the Carlow try line.

Regrettably the visitors were not finished yet and crossed for a third converted try to leave the score 22-0. Portarlington now need to secure wins in the coming two matches to guarantee them a quarter final place.
