Kilkenny defeat Portlaoise in Towns Cup rehearsal

Portlaoise travelled to Kilkenny on Sunday for their Leinster League Division 2A fixture and suffered a 36 point loss loss.

Kilkenny put pressure on the visitors from the kick off but found themselves down 7-0 after seven minutes when outhalf Alan O’Connell broke the home side’s defence to score under the posts. M Dowling added with the conversion.

From the kick off the visitors conceded a penalty which the home side kicked kicked into the corner. From the line out, Kilkenny put pressure on the visitors pack and scored out near the touch line. Kilkenny failed with the conversion to leave the score 7-5.

From the kick off the home side were penalized for going off side and M Dowling converted from in front of the posts.

However for the next 15 minutes Kilkenny put pressure on the visitors line and in the 28 minutes were rewarded with a converted penalty to leave the score 10 points to eight going into the final 10 min of the opening half.

The home side upped the intensity of their game and were rewarded with two converted tries and penalty to leave the visitors trailing 25points to 10 at the interval.

The home side continued to put pressure on the visitors from the kick off of the seond period and went further ahead after five minutes of the half to take 32 point to 10 lead.

The home side continued to dominate until in the 30th minute M Burke broke from a ruck and brought play deep into the home side’s 22 and rucked the ball to the line where M Lynsey got the touch down. M Dowling failed with the conversion attempt.

For the remaining of the game the home continued and added three further tries and two conversions to run out convincing winners 51-15.

Portlaoise must now make the same trip to Kilkenny next Sunday for their 1st round Provincal Towns Cup fixture. Richie Bond and his charges will be hoping to fare better this time and come out on the right side of the score board. Kick off is at 2.30pm. Please come along and give team your support.
