Port girls record first victory

The Portarlington U-15 Girls rugby team

The Portarlington U-15 Girls rugby team

After running Tullow close in a blitz two weeks ago, Port’s U15 girls were looking forward to the rematch in Tullow last Saturday.

Although the home side started the stronger with a try in the first five minutes the Port were girls were soon on the scoreboard. A powerful run by centre Jessica Hoey saw her cut through the defence and cross the line. Sophie Devereux added a second soon after when she drove through. Just before half time Tullow scored another try and the scores at half time were level.

Port certainly took the game to Tullow in the second half. Some excellent running from wings Tara Pidgeon and Nadine Thompson was causing all sorts of problems for Tullow out wide while the darting runs of scrum half Nicole Kirwan found holes all through the centre.

A great break from Amber Dowling from the kick off resulted in Dowling crossing the line for her debut try. This opened the floodgates for Port as Tullow struggled to cope with the strong running of Hoey, Dowling and Kelsey Maher.

Four minutes later Caithlin Hyland crossed for a try of her own. Another strong carry from Dowling saw her force her way over the try line for her second of the day. In the dying minutes of the game outhalf Sophie Devereux finished the scoring with another excellent individual effort. Port ran out convincing winners thanks to a great team display.

Portarlington: Caithlin Hyland, Kelsey Maher, Amber Dowling, Nicole Kirwan, Sophie Devereux, Nadine Thompson, Jessica Hoey, Tara Pidgeon.
