The Portarlington cover gets across in their Leinster League clash with Cill Dara

Portarlington Ladies travelled the short distance to Beech Park last Sunday to take on close rivals Cill Dara in the penultimate game of the Leinster League.

The home side reacted quickest from the kick off with a solid catch which was recycled quickly and a simple overlap allowed Cill Dara to score. The conversion was accurate and Cill Dara had secured seven points.

Port responded well to this early score carrying the game to Cill Dara and outhalf Catherine Bennett was helping the cause by pinning Cill Dara down in their half with some excellent kicks. The scrum and lineout were functioning and Port preserved possession however in attack the Port backline were not asking the tough questions of the Cill Dara defence.

Cill Dara’s confidence was high now and in a risky move they tried to run the ball out of the 22. A loose pass was seized on by Sarah Johnson and her off load released Promise Chapwanya to cross for Port’s opening score of the match. The half time score was 7-5.

The dogfight continued in the second half with Cill Dara looking to play more rugby. Port had made changes in the backline and they looked more threatening with ball in hand but Cill Dara had gone back to their strengths using mauls and scrums to secure go forward possession.

A second try was on the cards for the home side when they secured an attacking lineout on the five, set up the maul and the hooker took the honours. Port were now chasing the game and a losing bonus point.

After a Cill Dara sin binning it looked like Port would take advantage but again the possession could not be converted to scores. Cill Dara were piling on the pressure which forced Port to make some great cover tackles. Port indiscipline allowed Cill Dara to stretch the lead further with a penalty kick. The game began to fizzle out as injuries on both sides began to take its toll. The final score 15-5.
