Portarlington lose out to Tullow in Leinster League

Portarlington seniors travelled to Tullow last Sunday to contest the second game in the Leinster League and were somewhat unlucky to come away on the wrong end of the result after a competitive game

Tullow 45

Portarlington 23

Port conceded two early penalties in front of the posts and the Tullow outhalf made no mistake in securing the early lead. This spurred Port into action, some good forward play provided clean ball for the backs. The ball was passed out wide to winger Patsy Lawlor who was foot perfect in crossing for the opening try of the game.

Tullow looked to exert their dominance over the game again. Strong running rugby from the Tullow backs secured the try and the Tullow outhalf duly converted to leave the score at 13-5. Port’s indiscipline allowed Tullow to stretch their lead further with two successful penalties. With the score at 19-5 Port looked to force their way back into the game. The contest at scrum and ruck time was physically demanding on both teams. Despite Port’s best efforts Tullow crossed for another converted try.

With the physical battle taking its toll on the players substitutions were introduced from the Port bench. The Port lineout had been outstanding and it was this reliability that allowed the backs to attack the Tullow line with a renewed vigour. Captain Ross Doyle scored in the corner, the difficult conversion was accurate and the half time score was 24-12.

Substitute Paddy Hyland was having an excellent game and his efforts were rewarded in the opening minutes of the second half when he scored a try to leave the score at 24-17. Hyland continued this run of form with another penalty. The score was now 24-20 and there was some great running rugby on show. This resulted in another Tullow try. However Tullow conceded another penalty and again Hyland was clinical with the boot. Port were working their way back into the game with increased territory and the closing minutes were set to be a close encounter.

However disaster struck when Hyland suffered a horrific leg injury and had to be carried from the field with a suspected leg break. Unsurprisingly when the game restarted it was Tullow who settle quickest. Tullow scored two converted tries in the final minutes of the game to leave the final score at 45-23. The scoreline did not reflect the periods of dominance by Port. Port’s next game is 14th October away to Carlow
