Portlaoise cruise through

Portlaoise travelled to Cill Dara last Friday night to play in the first round of the U-13’s rugby club cup under lights.

The first ten minutes were tentative as both teams measured each other up. It was Portlaoise’s forwards however that eventually got on top and started to dominate the game.

The first try came when Luke Rigney and David Maher showed great strength to get within metres of the Cill Dara try line but it was the fierce Dan O’Rourke who broke the deadlock to get the first on the night.

Portlaoise’s second came after great movement from the back line with Evan Browne finishing the move. PJ Daly converted. Minutes later Portlaoise were awarded a penalty and the in-form winger converted from a difficult position.

Portlaoise were in again shortly afterwards with a great individual run from Luke Rigney. PJ converted the try. Just before the half time whistle Craig Adams got in for Portlaoise’s fourth try of the game giving Portlaoise a commanding 27-0 lead.

Portlaoise continued in the second half as they had finished the first and within minutes of the restart Evan Browne added his second try of the game on the back of another great passing move with the entire back line involved. PJ converted the try.

Evan and PJ then teamed up to catch the Cill Dara defence asleep. The out half kicked into space and the lighting quick winger was first to collect the ball to run in a lovely well worked try, which PJ also converted.

Cill Dara didn’t learn from their first mistakes as the Portlaoise out half tried the same manoeuvre minutes later only this time it was William Seale who collected and scored. PJ converted the try. With two minutes left to play Evan completed his hat trick of tries when another quick pass came to him from the ever consistent Dean Brophy. PJ converted again
