Portlaoise earn hard fought win in Hosie Cup

Portlaoise hosted North Kildare in their opening fixture of this seasons North Midlands Hosie Cup campaign at Togher on Sunday afternoon and were victorious by 16-9 after an entertaining game.

The home side opened the scoring after 16 minutesutes when centre Eoin Dooley touched down for the opening try, which was converted by replacement Michael Dowling.

Portlaoise continued to dominutesate territory but continued infringements resulted in a penalty to North Kildare on 20 minutes which was converted with the home side leading 7-3 after the first quarter.

A further Portlaoise infringement after 25 minutes gave the visitors a second kick at goal which left just one point separating the sides going into the final 10 minutesutes of the opening half. Portlaoise finished the half the stronger and were awarded a penalty with three minutes to go which Dowling converted leaving the home side ahead 10-6 at the break.

After the break the home side continued to dictate the state of play and after five minutes into the half were awarded a penalty which Dowling converted. Nth Kildare tried to up their game but the home side continued to dictate proceedings and went further ahead 15minutes into the half with a further Dowling penalty leaving the home side leading 16-6 going into the final quarter.

Portlaoise continued to dominate proceedings but continued infringements lead to the visitors being awarded a penalty in the 30th minute which was converted to leave the score 16-9. There was no further scores however with the home side finishing deserved winners.

Portlaoise playing with a blend of experienced players and Under 21 players had good performances for R Nicholls, J Kingsley, E Fingelton, E Dooley,and E Tynan in the backs, H Lalor. S Reilly, K Griffen, A Green and M Sherlock in the forwards and look forward to their next Hosie Cup fixture away to Newbridge on Saturday, September 8 at Rosetown, Kilcullen.

Portlaoise RFC Youths Section

Registration,Training and Coaching for the cominutesg season will commence on Saturday, September 1. Registration will commence at 10.30am for all under age Squads from Under 6/7 to Under 18’s. mence playing rugby. Registration fees for cominutesg season will be same as last season €60 for first child and €15 for each additional child.

Open Day /Family Day

Portlaoise Rugby Club are holding a Open/Family day on Sunday, September 9. The day will host a Ladies Tag Rugby Festival. minutesi Rugby festival. Jumping castles. Children’s fun events, All Ireland Hurling Final on Big Screen and other activities. Final details to be advised later.

Portlaoise RFC U-20/U-21 Rugby

This season Portlaoise will be fielding an U-20/U-21 side in the Leinster League. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday evenings at Club grounds at Togher, Portlaoise commencing at 7.30pm sharp. Players born 1992 ,1993 and 1994 are invited to attend. If you have not played rugby before and wish to give it a go please come along. This side will train along with the First and second Squads during the season. Portlaoise Womens Rugby

Portlaoise Womens Rugby squad have commenced preparations for the cominutesg season with training every Tuesday and Friday evening commencing at 7.30pm. Portlaoise is currently recruiting players and if you are interested in playing rugby whether you have previous playing experience or not, you should contact Portlaoise RFC womens captain Alison Holmes (Mobile 085-7140780).
