Last year’s beaten finalists Mountmellick United took the first steps towards Paddy Cotter Cup glory this time around with an impressive 4-2 win over St. Peters of Athlone in Conor Davis Park on Sunday afternoon.
Twice coming from behind, the hosts had to dig deep to grind out this fine win in an entertaining cup tie and the win sets up a mouth-watering 2nd Round fixture against Premier Division strugglers and near neighbours Clonaslee Utd.
Five of the game’s six goals came in the opening half which was played at a blistering pace. There was always going to be plenty of goals in this one and right from the off both keepers were placed under serious pressure.
