Portlaoise started the better and went ahead on 11 minutes with Stephen Goggin putting in Paul Cahillane who shot home from 16 yards out.

The lead went to 2-0 on 29 minutes with Brian Bowe scoring from close in following a corner kick. Portlaoise were well on top but some over elaborate play and some excellent goalkeeping were keeping them out and against the run of play

Then Portlaoise were dealt a sucker punch when, with their first attempt on goal, Seaford pulled a goal back following a poor clearance on 35 minutes.

The second half saw the home side take the inative and put a lot of pressure on the Portlaoise goal but good defending was restricting them to long range shots and corners while Darren Rogers, Paul Cahillane and Jason Murphy all went close to extending the lead for Portlaoise on breakaways.

The game was to have a dramatic finish. On 84 minutes, following a foul on Jason Murphy Portlaoise won a penalty that was saved.

Two minutes into injury time the home side were to draw level but four minues into injury time Paul Cahillane won a penalty that he converted sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The remaing time left was just 30 seconds to cue great joy on the Portlaoise line with the final whistle.

Portlaoise: D Browne, C Dunphy, N Guilfoyle, B Bowe, M Brennan, E White, S Goggin,A Dunne (S Brophy), J Murphy (O Carroll), D Rogers, P Cahillane
