Midlands United Power Wheelchair Soccer team got off to a flying start in the first competitive matches of the new All-Ireland league season.

United, who are the reigning league champions, played two matches at the University of Limerick Sports Complex on Saturday last.

The first match was against a much improved Sporting Fingal team. Midlands took the lead within five minutes after a well worked move, which was finished by Aoife McNicholl. Fingal pressed hard for much of the game and with five minutes to go in the second half United broke through again to score a second goal and clinch victory.

In the second match United played a very strong Kingdom Rebels team. This was a tense affair with both teams playing a very tight and tactical game. Eventually Midlands got the break-through late in the first half when Aoife McNicholl yet again popped up to score an excellent goal. For the rest of the match Kingdom Rebels pushed hard for an equaliser and came close on a couple of occasions but were thwarted by the strong defence of the Donogher brothers Tom and Sean.

So, after two games Midlands United have emerged with maximum points and share top spot in the league with Belfast Trail Blazers. This was a remarkable performance by United given the fact the a number of experienced players were missing. Next round of matches is in October in Limerick.

Team: Sean Donogher, Aishling McElligott, Emer O’Sullivan, Aoife McNicholl (Capt), Tom Donogher.
