Midlands United secure victory with late winner

The fourth round of matches in the Irish Power Soccer Premier League took place last Saturday in Limerick.

Midlands United took on Belfast Trail Blazers in a top of the table clash knowing that a Belfast victory would elevate them to a share of top spot.

The game as expected was extremely tight and tactical with perhaps Belfast edging the play in the first half. Midland United have yet to concede a goal in this league campaign, but only for the heroics of keeper Emmett Daly they would most definitely have found themselves two behind at half time.

The second half started brighter for Midlands and they pushed hard for the opening goal, but Belfast had their homework done and managed to thwart every attack.

With only seconds to go to the final whistle, Midlands were awarded a free on the edge of the Belfast square. From the free the ball was driven into the square and Emer O’Sullivan pounced driving the ball into the net. The final whistle blew and Midlands had managed to pull off an unexpected victory.

Midlands United have now extended their lead at the top of the table to six points and with only two rounds left in the league they are looking favourites to retain the Premier title.

Team: Sean Donogher, Emer O’Sullivan, Aoife McNicholl (Capt), Neil Sheehan, Tom Donogher, Emmett Daly.
