With two goals in the opening 10 minutes, Portlaoise had a great start and playing against a team from a lower division, they were always in control.

The first goal came on four minutes. Paul Cahillane cut in from the left after a good run he slid the ball under the advancing ‘keeper. It went to 2-0 on 10 minutes with Alan Dunne capitalising on hesitancey in the visiors defence. They failed to clear a cross and Alan controlled the ball and scored from close in.

Portlaoise went three up on 28 minutes with Jason Murphy scoring the first of his three goals when he shot home from 20 yards out after some good passing in midfield. Five minutes later Murphy struck again this time with a header from a left wing cross.

At half time Portlaoise were 4-0 and the pressure continued on a game St Pats side in the second half. Murphy completed his hatrick on 54 minutes scoring from close in after a great pass from Cahillane.

The scoring was completed on 66 minutes with some good passing from Niall Guilfoyle and Paul Cahillane on the left. Cahillane’s cross from the left picked out Shane Brophy who headed home from 10 yards out.

Portlaoise had several more chances to increase their advantage with Joe Delaney, Shane Brophy and Martin Staunton all being denied by some gutsy defending and St Pats were unlucky not to pull a goal back at the end being denied by a fingertip save by Danny Browne from a close in volley. Portlaoise now play Coil Dubh in the next round who will provide a stern test.
