Portlaoise bounce back

Portlaoise bounced back from their FAI junior cup defeat to TEK with an impressive home win on Saturday night at Rossleighan Park.

The visitors came to frustrate Portlaoise playing five across midfield and trying to hit on the break. Portlaoise had a great chance to go ahead on 23 minutes when they won a penalty following a foul on Brian Bowe but the Blackrock keeper made a super save diving to his left to keep out Jason Murphy’s spot kick.

The breakthrough came on 31 minutes with Darren Rogers cutting in from the right and passing to Jason Murphy who scored from close range.

The lead went to 2-0 on 44 minutes. Following a Blackrock corner Jason Bergin found Darren Rogers on the half way line with his clearance. He ran on and drew the defence off to the right and then squared the ball to Murphy to double the Portlaoise lead.

The second half saw the visitors come more into the game but they were restricted by the home defence to long range shots.

The game’s third goal came on 67 minutes when chasing down a clearance from James Furlong, Rogers dispossed a defender and with the gaolkeeper having come out of his area he shot home from 35 yards out.

This probably killed the game as a contest although Blackrock never gave up trying and it was Rogers who was provider on 78 minutes as he crossed from the right for Murphy to head home and complete his hat-trick .

A good team display by Portlaoise with the defence in control throughout but there will be tougher games ahead.
