Second half blitz sees Ashbourne through against gallant Portlaoise

Portlaoise Town U14s travelled to Ashbourne last Sunday to play the local side in Round 5 of the SFAI National Cup.

The game was switched to Ashbourne Rugby Club grounds due to the Ashbourne soccer pitch being unplayable.

Ashbourne who were a strong physical side dominated this game from the start and went 1-0 up after five minutes when their center forward fired home from a rebound after Sean McCormack had made a brilliant save from point blank range. Ashbourne then missed a penalty on 10 minutes when their midfielder’s fierce shot hit the crossbar and went over.

Portlaoise did well to deny Ashbourne from going further ahead when Sean McCormack made two excellent saves to deny their left winger.

Portlaoise then made it 1-1 on 27 minutes when a brilliant pass from Oran Murphy sent Joe Nevin through on goals and he lobbed the keeper to finish in style.

Oran Murphy then went close just before the break but the Ashbourne defender make a great block to deny him a certain goal to leave the score 1-1 at the break.

Ashbourne then had the strong wind behind them in the second half and Portlaoise held out until the 50th minute when Ashbourne then scored five goals without reply in a 15 minute spell to run out easy winners in the end.

Portlaoise did have two chances to score in this period but brilliant stops by the Ashbourne keeper denied both Brian Sheehy and Oran Murphy from scoring.

Portlaoise did their best against a far bigger and more physical team who were also very skillful and this team should go all the way and win out this competition.

Best for the town on the day were Niall Doran Ciaran Rowney Brian Sheehy Aaron Wright Kaelyn Thompson and Man of the Match Sean McCormack.

Portlaoise Squad Sean McCormack Fionn Scully Conor Lacken Ciaran Rowney Niall Doran Ruairi Lewis Brian Sheehy Kaelyn Thompson Aaron Wright Oran Murphy Joe Nevin Ronan McEvoy Craig Reddin Ross Brennan Aaron Feane.
