Seventh heaven for Portlaoise

Portlaoise continued their quest to retain the MSL Major Division Title with this emphatic win over Mullingar in Rossleighan last Saturday afternoon.

Mullingar were first off the blocks and created two chances in the first 10 minutes but good defending by Fionn Scully and a fine save from Sean McCormack denied them the openinig goal.

After this Portlaoise dominated the game and took the lead on 12 minutes when good play by Ruairi Lewis sent Aaron Wright away on the left and and his cross was volleyed home by Oran Murphy to make it 1-0.

Oran Murphy then become provider when a brilliant cross field pass sent Aaron Wright away on the left and he finished to the back of the net with a fine low shot to make it it 2-0 on 20 minutes.

Portlaoise lost Ross Brennan on 25 minutes through injury and he was replaced by Aaron Feane. Oran Murphy and Niall Doran went close in the final minutes of the half but were denied on both occasions by fine saves by the Mullingar ‘keeper to leave the score 2-0 at the break.

Portlaoise then went on the attack straight after the break and Oran Murphy went close with a fine effort from just inside the box after brilliant passing between Ronan McEvoy and Joe Nevin created the chance. On 45 minutes another pinpoint cross from Aaron Wright on the left was headed home by Oran Murphy to make it 3-0.

Aaron Wright then scored his second goal when, after a fine run down the left, he shot under the diving keeper to make it 4-0 on 55 minutes.

Oran Murphy completed his hat-trick on 60 minutes when a brilliant pass from Brian Sheehy from the halfway line sent him unopposed through and he beat the ‘keeper with ease to make it 5-0 to the town.

Ruairi Lewis made it 6-0 on 65 minutes after good build up play by Craig Reddin and Ronan McEvoy. Lewis was sent away on the right and he beat two defenders to finish with a fine volley to the top of the net.

Brian Sheehy completed the scoring on the day. After receiving a pass from Kaelyn Thompson he turned brilliantly in the box and fired home to leave the final score 7-0 to Portlaoise.

Portlaoise now have won eight from eight in the league and are top of the MSL Major Division League table on 24 points and are six points ahead of their nearest rivals Mullingar Town A.

Portlaoise Towns next league game is at home next Saturday to Tullamore Town at 10am.

Portlaoise were drawn away to Ashbourne FC who play in the North Dublin Schoolboy League Premier Division in the last 32 of the SFAI National Cup and this game is fixed for the weekend of the 2/3rd of February.
