Stradbally perform giant killing act

Premier Division side Stradbally overcame their Senior Division visitors from Athlone in a cracking cup tie in the lawn on Sunday to book a quarter-final place in the Paddy Cotter Cup.

Melville Utd 3

.

Stradbally fell behind on minutes when Mellville scored a header from a terrific cross. Jody Dillon got Stradbally level when he rounded the keeper on 15 minutes after a fine through ball from Derek Gorman. Colin Beale then put the home side in front on 24 minutes with a fine finish from a tight angle after the Melville keeper had kept out an effort from Dillon.

Melville came back at Stradbally and equalised on 37 minutes to leave it 2-2 at the break. Derek Beale Headed Stradbally ahead again on the hour with a fine header from a Derek Gorman corner. The home side had their tails up now and Jody Dillon added a second on 71 minutes before completing his hat-trick 77 minutes to put the game beyond the Athlone men who to their credit kept at it and pulled back a consolation goal in stoppage time.

In a very entertaining sporting game that only had one yellow card, Stradbally had very good displays from Derek Beale, Conor Delaney and Paddy Bergin.
