SPORTSTAR - Louise Mahony is Sportstar of the Year for '08

The Harps' Louise Mahony has won the Lismard Autoworld Leinster Express Sportstar of the Year award for 2008 after sealing a runaway victory in our on-line poll.

The three time All-Ireland medal winner and All-Star nominee received an incredible 72,436 votes, which was enough to secure 50% of the total amont of votes polled. Mahony's success this year sees her go one better than last year, when she came second behind previous winner Eimear Fitzpatrick. Her strong support base from last year obviously stuck with her for this year, and she can now look forward to driving away in a brand new Peugeot 308, which she can use throughout 2009.

Second in the running was Sarsfield's captain Ciara O'Loughlin who registered 43,534 votes to claim 30% of the total amount of votes cast. O'Loughlin polled strongly in the closing stages of the competition, pulling in almost 30,000 votes in last few days. Heywood basketballer John Kerr came third with 10% of the votes (15, 317 votes), Luke Doyle was fourth with 5% (7,948 votes) and Barry Pender was fifth with 1% (2,479).

Mahony was the monthly winner for November, after she captained The Harps' to their third All-Ireland Junior Club Camogie Championship victory in a row as the Durrow based side created history. Mahony also received her second All-Star nominaton in 2008 for her performances with Laois, who just missed out on a place in the Junior All-Ireland final after Clare beat them in the semi-final by a point. Louise was also honoured at the Laois GAA awards in 2008 as the Camogie Player of the Year, which saw her collect the award for the second year in a row.
