The Chairman of Portlaoise GAA club John Hanniffy has paid tribute to the town's Australian Rules star Zach Tuohy as an ambassador for Portlaoise.

Mr Hanniffy was speaking at the presentation of a Certificate of Achievement Award to Zach for his success on the sports field Down Under by the Portlaoise Municipal District in Laois County Council.

The young Portlaoise man recently signed for Geelong Cats and is one of the few players from Ireland to reach the top in the AFL, Australia's biggest sport.

Zach continues to play for Portlaoise GAA when possible and starred for the Laois minors in 2007.
