Busy art students in Mountmellick CS

Senior Art students from Mountmellick Community School made recent visits to national and local galleries as part of their Appreciation of Art studies.

On Wednesday 16th January, 26 senior students along with their teachers, Ms Mangan and Ms Lennon visited two of the countries’ most significant galleries; The National Gallery and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. At IMMA they viewed the Ned Kelly exhibition by the celebrated Australian artist Sidney Nolan.

The exhibition is on loan from the National Gallery of Australia and depict the exploits of the notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, the son of an Irish convict in the Australian outback in the late 1870s and early 1880s.

Later the group were treated to a guided tour of the National Gallery where they viewed ‘The Taking of Christ’ by Carravagio as well as paintings by Jack B. Yeats.

On Tuesday 22nd January,a group of 5th Year Art Students made the short walk to Mountmellick Library where they were privileged to meet with local artist,Tom Joyce. Tom’s exhibition entitled ‘The Winter Exhibition’ is on display in the library until the end of January. Tom discussed his work with the students in an informal, engaging and highly entertaining manner.The students were delighted to discover that great art can sometimes be found on your doorstep and they are looking forward to incorporating some of Tom’s techniques into their own work.
