In a bid to make it a success, the organising committee of the Portlaoise St Patrick’s Day parade have decided against a theme for this year’s event.

Last year’s theme was ‘Fairytales and Fables’, which left people “scratching their heads for ideas”, according to Ger Whelan of the organising committee.

Mr Whelan said that the parade is open to all ideas, as long as it’s entertaining and colourful.

“We have no problem with people advertising, but we don’t want vans driving down the street either. That doesn’t entertain the kids,” he said.

All schools, businesses, groups and organisations are being asked to get involved by making a float or putting together a display of street pageantry.

“We can only run the parade, we can’t make it, so we need the community of Portlaoise to get involved,” he said.

The parade will leave the County Hall at 12.30pm, turning right at Supermacs, towards the church, then back up Main St to the Top Square. To get involved contact Ger Whelan on 0872530124.
