Every sitting room in Laois was tuned into RTÉ last Monday night, August 18, to watch our very own Teresa Brennan grace the stage at the Rose of Tralee Festival.

The Irish Múinteoir from Barrowhouse was third up in The Dome, and sang a beautiful interpretation of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face in english and ‘as gaeilge’.

It was the Philadelphia Rose Maria Walsh who won the title of Rose of Tralee, and Teresa wished her the best.

“You actually forget about the competition element of it when you’re part of it.

“There can only be one winner, so well done to Maria, she’s such a nice girl. The Rose of Tralee isn’t a walk in the park, and she’ll be very busy for the next year,” she told the Leinster Express.

Teresa loved the opportunity to represent her county.

“It was the best week of my life, and being on stage was magical.

“Daithí makes it all so easy, and you forget that it’s being televised. You’re on and off before you know it!,” she said.

The Rose Tour, where all 32 roses travel around to various places in Ireland, was one of Teresa’s highlights, saying it was “just like a holiday.”

“There was no pressure. We did lots of activities and learned about the heritage, which was nice for the girls who came from abroad.

“Lough Rynn Castle in Leitrim was one of my favorite places, it was really beautiful,” she said.

Teresa said that all of the roses were very nice, and she made many great friends.

“You hear all these things about some girls not getting along, but that doesn’t happen at all.

“I couldn’t recommend it any more to girls in Laois who are thinking about it. Nothing else has come close it, how amazing it’s been,” she said.

Teresa would like to thank everybody for their kind words and support over the past few months.

“I received cards from people that I’ve never even met before, so the support has just been absolutely magnificent.

“The whole of Barrowhouse was down in Tralee supporting me too! I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone, and also to the local council,” she said.

Teresa will be busy in her role as Laois Rose for the next year. If you would like her to attend any formal events please contact The Laois Rose Centre.
