Love and longing in the great war

Roundwood House

Roundwood House

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of The First World War, Bewley’s Cafe Theatre is presenting a special programme of words and music in Roundwood House.

Featured prominently are the letters of Artillery Officer, Eric Appleby, to his Athlone sweetheart, Phyllis Kelly. In this moving correspondence, he records the discomforts, horrors, banalities and ever present humour of trench life as he yearns to be back with his beloved. The show also comprises diary excerpts from the Front, news bulletins and some of the great Irish war poems. Tickets are €50 which includes lunch. Lunch will be served at 2:30pm followed by the performance at 3:30pm. Call 057 87 32120 or email
