Mountmellick hosts WW 1 commemeration

Soldiers in WW1

Soldiers in WW1

An action packed two week festival is set to take place in Mountmellick to commemorate local heroic soldiers who took part in WW1 one hundred years ago.

The festival opens on Friday August 22, with a unique concert of music, song, and dance featuring Emer Dunne & Drua and other local acts.

An insight into the reasons why local young men joined the British army to fight in this horrific war, where many of them were numbered among the 49,000 Irish lives that were lost and as many more were wounded, will be portrayed through spoken word and music and song from the era in question.

With music, song, and dance the audience will be taken on the journey of the local involvement in WW1. The festival, extending over two weeks, is being organised by a local committee whose members have been working tirelessly. They have researched and documented at least one hundred names of those young men, names that will be inscribed on a permanent plaque to be erected to their memory.

Admission is €10 and tickets are available from MDA, Mountmellick Arts Centre, Horans Shop, or call 086 1533614 for more information.
