A new book of well-known and rare traditional Laois music has been published by musician Aine McGeeney of the band Goitse.

‘Lovely Laois’ combines familiar and rare pieces by Laois musicians or about Laois places and faces. This is the first time a comprehensive collection of Laois tunes and songs with their words has been gathered into one volume making it invaluable for a wide range of musicians.

Aine is also a tutor of the Music in d’House project run by Abbeyleix Heritage Company in collaboration with local Comhaltas stalwarts Paul Lynch and PJ Phelan. The book represents a significant undertaking by Aine to unearth tunes and sometimes put songs that were handed down into sheet music format and also marry the lyrics to it.

The music was put to the test by the multi-talented musicians who attended free music classes on Sunday afternoons in Heritage House. Along with two other lead tutors, Colm Phelan and Yvonne Bolton, the group created an atmosphere of learning and sharing skills throughout the project.

Details of the book launch are being finalised and will be forthcoming soon. Copies of ‘Lovely Laois’ will be available from Heritage House at a very reasonable €10. The cover price will go towards funding some music tuition and book printing and venue costs.

Funding from Laois Partnership through Mark Clancy and Anne Goodwin and enthusiastic participation by the musical community was vital to the project’s success. Please contact Paula at info@abbeyleixheritage.com or 057 8731653 or at Reception in Heritage House for further information or to book an advance copy of the book, which is expected to be in demand.
