Portlaoise families can look forward to a improvement in play areas for children thants to a €15,000 grant to overhaul one of the town’s public playgrounds.

The money allocated by the Department of Youth and Children’s affairs will be used to refurbish and extend the playground in the People’s Park off the Timahoe Road.

It is planed to create an “innovative natural playground/space” which, it is said, will create an “outdoor learning environment and playscape that is safe, accessible and engaging for children”.

Laois Offaly TD and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, who up to recently was the Minister for children and Youth Affairs, welcomed the announcement.

“I know there were a considerable number of local authorities seeking funding under the Recreation Capital Grants Scheme so I am delighted that €15,000 will go towards the playground in the town park.

“It is also my understanding that Laois County Council will provide further funding to the project to ensure that this can be a fantastic amenity for every family in Portlaoise.

“The existing playground has been in use for 12 years so I am pleased that this money will go towards its upgrade and refurbishment.

“I would hope that works can commence as soon as possible,” he said.
