Portlaoise Singers present ‘Songs of Love’ annual end of year concert

The Portlaoise Singers will be celebrating their 39th anniversary this year, with a special concert ‘Songs of Love’.

The summer of 1963 was known as the summer of love - it was the era of The Beatles and Elvis, to name but two, and for their 39th Christmas concert The Portlaoise Singers are recalling that summer of 50 years ago with a concert of love songs.

Their Beatles tribute will include All You Need is Love, Yesterday, Strawberry Fair and When I’m Sixty Four.

From old Vienna there will be waltzes and songs from The Merry Widow by Lehar.

Love songs from Ireland will include The Rose of Tralee, Danny Boy and My Lagan Love.

From The Great American Songbook the concert will feature songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern. Many of these songs were made famous by Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. The choir will also sing a four part Elvis song, Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.

To end the concert the audience will be treated to some all time favourite love songs from an older era, such as Let The Rest of The World Go By, When I Grow Too Old to Dream, We’ll Meet Again and Love is a Many Splendored Thing.

This year the choir will be joined by three local soloists: Niamh Griffin, who has just graduated with an MA in music therapy having already gained a B.Mus. in vocal studies; Heather Fogarty, a third year student in vocal studies and already a Feis Ceoil winner, who recently she played in The Mikado in The National Concert Hall to great acclaim; and Patricia Finnegan, who is principal of The Kellyville School of Music and back with the group again this year.

This year the choir is stronger than ever with 65 members and they look forward to welcoming old and new friends at The Heritage Hotel on Sunday December 15 at 8pm.

Tickets are priced €15 and are available from the Dunamaise Arts Centre.
