Mary Heaney excellently executed the role of Contest Chair at the clubs International Speech & Evaluation Contests of Portlaoise Toastmasters last week.

Three speakers went head-to-head delivering such exemplary speeches that the judges had to call on the tie-breaker judge. Meree O’Sullivan ran out as eventual winner with Bryan Holland taking the runner-up slot and Keith Clarke losing out on the tie-break.

The Evaluation Contest also saw three Toastmasters deliver high quality evaluations.

Donal Cahill pipped the others to the post as the winner, with Jimmy Fitzpatrick in second and Bryan Holland in third place.

First and second place from both club contests will go on to the area finals on Wednesday 5th March at the Seven Oaks Hotel, Athy Road, Carlow. Mary Heaney admired the courage of all contestants and praised them for taking part.

The Mary O’Loughlin award was awarded jointly to Mary Heaney for her exceptional organisation of the events of the evening, and to Mary White for her commitment to the club. Mary made it to the meeting and fulfilled her duties as Topics Master despite a bad fall leaving her with a black eye and fractured bones!

Portlaoise Toastmasters meet the 2nd and 4th Monday each month in the Killeshin Hotel at 8pm. Our next meeting is on the 24th February. New members are always welcome and the first two sessions are free.

The club would love to see you at their next meeting on 24th February at the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise, 8pm.
