Durrow stands out in Laois for its festivals and the community got its reward at the Laois Commmunity Forum Awards for the most sucessful staging to date of the Scarecrow Festival.

Evelyn Clancy accepted the Arts, Culture and Heritage Award on behalf of the Durrow Community Forum which organises the summer festival.

“It is brillant and not just for the festival committee, but also for 100 volunteers that help us. It is also a big community effort,” she told the Leinster Express.

Ms Clancy said the Forum works all year around on events other than the festival but she said the Scarecrow festival brings local people together to work with each other. This happened more effectively in 2013 said Ms Clancy.

There will be a concrete benefit from this year’s festival because the funds raised will help cover the costs of redeveloping Durrow’s Green for public use.
