Earlier this month Abbeyleix Library was the venue for an Irish traditional night to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge. The event was held in conjunction with Spink Ceolamhtas.
MC for the night was former Ballinakill NS principal and Coiste na Gaeilge member Micheál Martin who conducted proceedings ably and with much humour as bearlá agus i ngaeilge.
The majority of performers from Spink CCE were primary and secondary level students and the show opened up with a series of trad tunes. Instruments included banjos, flutes, a tin whistle, fiddles an accordion and a harpist. A large crowd in attendance enjoyed the music and festive atmosphere. Indeed those who came to return and borrow books from the library were mostly enticed to stay on by the quality of the entertainment for the entire performance, which lasted for over an hour.
After the opening music all-ireland U-17 figure dancing champion, Shauna Tierney, from Abbeyleix, took to the floor. She left all in little doubt as to why she earned her title. Later she was joined by Miriam Bricken from Kilbricken. There was a wealth of musical talent on display and the audience were very impressed with the performances.
