Thousands celebrate steam rally

More steam engines appeared at the 50th National Steam Rally in Stradbally than at any rally ever held before in Ireland.

Visitors enjoyed one of the best rallies in Stradbally, when numbers attending exceeded over 20,000 over the two day bank holiday event.

Sarah Culliton, sponsored by Stradbally Tyre Services, was crowned the 2014 Steam Queen winner.

Adrian Cosby’s wife, Annabel Cosby officially opened the 50th National Steam Rally and she extended a warm welcome to all the guests who attended and declared that it was particularly exciting given that 2014 was a celebration of the rally’s 50th anniversary.

To celebrate the anniversary, a whole host of additional entertainment was organised this year including 50 working steam engines Mr. Ken Graham, President of the Irish Steam Preservation Society was praised the hard work.

“The hard work of all the committee chaired by Dick Dunne definitely paid off. Not only had we extra vintage exhibits, but we also got extra trade stands to cater for all types of visitors, including auto-jumble, fashion, arts, crafts, jewellery and much much more’, Mr Graham said.

Dick Dunne, Rally Chairman thanked all the volunteers who helped make the rally such a success and said that the community of Stradbally, as well as local businesses and especially the rally committee had helped ensure the weekend went so well.
