Brain drain leads Laois to strive for more job opportunities in the county

Laois County Council’s new marketing campaign sets out to attract investors to Laois
A new campaign has been launched to promote Laois as an attractive location for business investment and expansion amid the daily exodus of people from the county for work.
Laois County Council officially launched InvestLaois on Tuesday, May 26 in order to attract greater investment in the county and promote Laois jobs.
Supported by the EU Just Transition Fund, the campaign is designed to support economic development and regional growth through highlighting the people, businesses and infrastructure shaping economic development across Laois, including the role of Junction 17 National Enterprise Park in supporting future business and employment growth.
The central idea driving the campaign is to promote Laois as offering an alternative to larger city regions such as Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.
Over the coming months, InvestLaois will showcase stories from local businesses and professionals about why they chose to locate their businesses in Laois.
Ahead of the launch of InvestLaois, Emily Brew, the Senior Account Manager with the marketing company commissioned by the council, We Are The People, gave a presentation on the campaign to Laois County Council.
Ms Brew explained that this is the perfect time to be launching such a campaign, especially given the recent findings from the Laois commuter study.
Out of the 1,650 people in Laois surveyed, 81% said they would prefer to work in the county and the average commute time stands at around 1 house 25 minutes, with 14% stretching to 2 hours.
“There is a real shift in the way businesses are operating and there’s a real appetite for it,” Ms Brew said regarding the commuter survey.
With such a significant number of people interested in more work opportunities in Laois, this campaign aims to target businesses who can make these decisions and broaden prospects for the county.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive of Laois County Council, Michael Rainey, said: “InvestLaois is about telling a confident and credible story about the future of business in our county. Laois offers connectivity, a skilled talent pool, infrastructure, room to grow and an exceptional quality of life.
“Through this campaign, we are showcasing the workforce and businesses who have invested and are succeeding in the county while highlighting the strategic opportunities available for future investment.”
