€60,000 to remove the silt and weeds on the river Nore between the two bridges in Castletown

Funding to carry out a clean up of the River Nore in Castletown has been announced with €60,000 being earmarked for the project.

The money will be used to remove the silt and weeds on the river Nore between the two bridges in Castletown.

Laois TD Sean Fleming has welcomed the allocation for this ‘essential work’.

“I arranged for Minister Boxer Moran, Office of Public Works, to visit Castletown a few weeks ago and this funding of €60,000 is as a direct result of this visit,” said Deputy Fleming.

“This funding will support the essential works to be undertaken by Laois County Council to address the problem at this location in Castletown.

“A major job is required to clear all the blocked archways in the bridge and remove all the silt back up the river on both sides of the weir. However, Laois County Council have to get planning permission to do this and they are currently working on this at the moment.

“When the planning is cleared, I will make sure the necessary funds required is made available to do a thorough and complete job on the river Nore in Castletown.”
