Laois young trad music group are Scór na nÓg All Ireland champions

Four students from Mountrath Community School and a fifth from St Fergal's College Rathdowney struck gold recently to win the All Ireland Scór na nÓg final.

The 'super five' group are Ellen Scott on fiddle, David Scott on banjo, Maeve Scott on concertina, Peter Bennetton piano and Conal Nevin on accordion.

The group representing Borris/ Kilcotton GAA Club, first won the Laois and Leinster titles, then won the coveted final over mid term break, in the Knockarea Arena in Sligo, cheered on by a host of proud supporters.

“We really enjoyed playing the jig and reel in the final,” said Maeve Scott.

The students have treated the Mountrath school community to their lively melodies at lunchtime on a few occasions since their winning performance.

"The Scór showcase is a wonderful event to engage the rich culture and music that is thriving across the country, and Laois has an excellent track record in this prestigious competition," said teacher Joan Hallissey from Mountrath CS.
